What are structural glass balustrades?

The first is a strong base channel capable of securely housing thick glass panels and resisting the loads transferred through the glass. The second is the use of glass panels with the required thickness and strength to resist bending moments and imposed loads.

Since the revision of BS 6180 in 2011, architects now have the option to specify glass balustrades either with or without a handrail. Where a handrail is included, it ties the glass panels together, adding sturdiness and ensuring that the system can withstand the required load even if one of the glass panels fails.

Where the design intent calls for a frameless finish with no handrail, toughened laminated safety glass must be specified. This ensures that the glass can withstand the necessary loads, and in the event that one side of the laminate breaks, the remaining layer will continue to provide containment and safety.

Base fixing systems must accommodate building tolerances while providing adequate structural connection. Various fixing systems exist, from discrete point fixings to continuous structural glazing channels, each offering different aesthetic and performance characteristics.

Glasstec Systems were appointed to design and install approximately 70 linear metres of frameless structural glass balustrades alongside 30 linear metres of posted glass balustrades across three floors and apartment balconies.

Minimal frameless glass balustrade systems using 19mm clear toughened laminated glass featured on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor levels to provide safe barrier protection and maintain the light, elegant feel of the impressive full height atrium area at the core of the building.
