Steel glazed entrance door sets and two lanterns for a heritage project.

Glasstec Systems’ expertise in bespoke structural glazing was called upon for the design, supply and installation of an entrance door set in a 1910 building, in London’s trendy Carnaby district.
As well as the door opening, Glasstec’s brief included the supply and installation of two overhead lanterns.
The project
Located in Soho, and once the heart of the ‘Swinging Sixties’, Carnaby boasts many iconic buildings that have played their part in London’s history.
The door set was commissioned for 42 – 44 Beak Street, a heritage building known for being the headquarters of RSA Films, founded by film directors Ridley Scott and Tony Scott.
Now a mixed use building, 42 – 44 Beak Street offers high-end commercial office space and production studios, primarily for the media and creative industries. It therefore welcomes many users through its doors.
The brief
The main entrance to the building required a new internal door set. A replacement pair of lanterns was also commissioned as part of the project, one over the front entrance and the other over the building’s side entrance.
Glasstec’s specialist skills in structural glazing design were key to producing a high-use, heavy-duty internal door set that would complement the industrial aesthetic of the heritage building. Detailed design planning, technical expertise and problem solving were all essential to deliver the best possible outcome; structurally and aesthetically.
The solution
The Glasstec Systems team designed two doors for the opening. One was the main single leaf door, the other was a slave leaf (used less frequently). A slave leaf was specified so that it can stay bolted in place, opened only when additional room is needed for moving large equipment or furniture in or out of the building. The single leaf door was designed to be slightly wider than the slave leaf.

The internal door set was fitted with fixed glazed side screens, one in each door, and an arched, glazed top screen of three segments.
The steel door frame was galvanised and polyester powder coated (PPC) in a standard RAL black colour finish, then silicone glazed.
On the single leaf door, a tubular brass pull handle was fixed half way up both sides of the door, from where it curved down to the bottom of the frame. Aligned with the top of the handle on each side was an industrial style perforated steel sheet with 3mm round holes. The slave leaf door was installed without operating handles.
28mm double glazed units were specified to achieve a U-value (thermal transmittance) of 1.6 W/m²K. The lower the U-value, the better the thermal efficiency of the door. Current building regulations state that all glazed door sets must achieve a U-value of 1.8 or less, so the 1.6 U-value was beyond the standard specification.
The two lanterns Glasstec supplied and installed replaced the existing lanterns overhanging the two building entrances. The upgrade was necessary to improve the exterior with an appropriate high-end aesthetic.
Project outcomes
The bespoke design, supply and installation of the new door set met all the brief criteria.
The strength, quality, security and thermal efficiency of the doors were designed to withstand the daily use of resident commercial companies and visitors entering and exiting the building, while the on-trend industrial aesthetic perfectly encapsulated the commercial focus of this mixed use building.
